Tail Programs
What is a tail program good for? The original tail UNIX command is a program to display a text file and monitor the file for changes. All changes are displayed in realtime. So tail is perfect for watching log files.
For Windows there's no tail command. There are many good replacements for tail (e.g. BareTail or Tail for Win32) out there. LogExpert is one of these tail programs. It has nice features which are very useful if you have to work with log files.
The main focus is log file content filtering, searching and fast navigation.
When you need to view two or more log files of application side-by-side (e.g. a main log and a verbose debug log, or a server log and a client log). Log Expert can parse the timestamps of the log files. So scrolling all open log files to the same time position is done by a simple mouse click. If server and client log files doesn't match exactly because of different system clocks, there's no problem. You can add/substract an offset to the displayed timestamp values.
An additional feature is the 'Filter to Tab' Button. You can 'launch' new filter tab windows from within the filter view. Every launched filter tab remembers its filter parameters and will automatically update its content as soon as new incoming log file content matches the filter.
LogExpert is a Windows tail program (a GUI replacement for the Unix tail command). LogExpert is free for non-commercial or commercial use.
